Honors Twelve Nominees and Announces The 2013 Recipient of

Prestigious Fernando Award For Volunteerism

 The 55th Annual Fernando Award Foundation’s Dinner, to be held on Friday, September 20th, will honor this year’s twelve nominees as well as select and announce the Recipient of the 2013 prestigious Fernando Award, the highest honor for volunteerism and civic accomplishment in the San Fernando Valley.

Fernando Award Foundation Announces

Board of Directors For 2013

(Los Angeles) The Fernando Award Foundation, Inc. recently announced its 2013 Board of Directors, to be led by President Dennis A. Watsabaugh, Dennis A. Watsabaugh Consulting.

Celebrating its 55th year, the Fernando Award Foundation honors community leaders who have demonstrated outstanding achievement, over a lifetime, in volunteerism and civic accomplishment in the San Fernando Valley. Membership in the organization is open to service and charitable organizations located in the San Fernando Valley.

“The Board of Directors and I look forward to carrying on the tradition of honoring those leaders who have served the community for so many years. We will continue to award ten scholarships to high school seniors who have volunteered during their student years,” said Dennis Watsabaugh.

In addition to Watsabaugh, the 2013 Board of Directors includes: Vice-President Rafer Johnson, 2010 Fernando Award Recipient; and Vice-President, Scholarships, Joan Maltese. Deborah Sable will handle Events; Bruce Miller, E.A. continues as Treasurer; and George Perez will serve as Secretary.

Joel Simon, the 2012 Fernando Award Recipient, joins the following members of the Board of Directors: Marilou Cheng, Liat Cohen, David Honda, Marianne Jocz, Richard Leyden, Ronna Lubash, Thomas Oliver, Art Pfefferman, Gloris Pollack, Tom Soute, Gary Thomas, MC Townsend, Patti Jo Wolfson and Ed Viramontes.

Fernando Award Foundation Names Ulises Diaz as Scholarship Recipient

Canoga Park High School Grad Attends Santa Monica College

(Los Angeles) – – January 14, 2013 – The Fernando Award Foundation has awarded its annual scholarship to Ulises Diaz, 18 years old. A Canoga Park High School graduate, now attending Santa Monica College, Ulises credits the West Valley Boys and Girls Club with offering him a place to learn. “The Club provided a positive environment, provided free tutoring, and always asked how I was progressing in my school classes”, explained Ulises.

His grades improved with the guidance and help from tutors, and Ulises joined the College Bound Program, hoping to attend University of Califoria Los Angeles (UCLA) in the future. The Fernando Award Foundation’s scholarship award will help him reach that goal.

The Fernando Award Foundation, Inc. promotes and recognizes lilfetime volunteerism in the San Fernando Valley. In addition, the Foundation offers 11 annual scholarships that are based on the student’s involvement in community service and volunteerism performed outside of that required by the schools.

The Fernado Award Foundation awards one $2,000 scholarship and ten $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors and community college students that may be used for university, community college or trade schools. Local high school principals, counselors, teachers and community members are invited to identify and nominate students who they believe demonstrate the qualities defined by the above scholarship awards.

Joel M. Simon Selected as Recipient of 2012 Fernando Award

Honored For Volunteerism and Civic Accomplishment

The recent 54th Annual Fernando Award Foundation’s Dinner selected Calabasas resident Joel M. Simon as the 54th Recipient of the prestigious Fernando Award. The gala dinner and selection took place on September 21st at the Warner Center Marriott. The ten nominees for 2012 were all honored and celebrated throughout the evening. At the conclusion of the program, Joel Simon was announced as the chosen recipient for this year. The Fernando Award is the highest honor for volunteerism and civic accomplishment in the San Fernando Valley.

About Joel M. Simon

Joel Simon, a partner in Alperstein, Simon, Farkas, Gillin & Scott, LLP, has been practicing law in the San Fernando Valley for thirty years. He handles cases involving business law and has been an advocate for the rights of the gravely disabled. For more than 30 years, he has donated his services to Para Los Niño’s, an organization that helps the children of Skid Row by providing a day care program and family support services. Joel has been the Chairman of the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Professional Responsibility and Ethics Committee and the Vice President of the LA County Bar Dispute Resolution Service. Calabasas residents, Joel and his wife, Sylvia, support many reforms to improve education at Los Angeles Unified School District.

Fernando Award Foundation Requests Names of Nominees For Fernando Award Recipient

The 2012 Recipient Will Be Honored For Volunteerism &  Civic Accomplishment

(Los Angeles) – – June 7, 2012 – The Fernando Award Foundation, presenting the highest award for volunteerism in the San Fernando Valley, will hold its annual recognition of the 2012 nominees with a dinner at the Warner Center Marriott on September 21, 2012. At this time, the Fernando Award Foundation Selection Committee is asking community and civic organizations to select their nominees for the San Fernando Valley’s most prestigious award for volunteerism and civic accomplishment. The call for nominations has been extended to July 30, 2012.

Organizations and businesses, including Chambers of Commerce, non-profits, Valley Industry & Commerce Association (VICA) members, and past recipients, may contact Dennis Watsabaugh at (818) 231-2288 for a Nomination Packet. Organizations can also visit the Fernando Award Foundation website and download a Nomination Packet: www.fernandoaward.org

Initiated in 1959, by a group of San Fernando Valley business and community leaders interested in encouraging community involvement, the award is open to all Valley residents. “The mission and purpose of the Fernando Award is to promote and recognize lifetime volunteerism in the San Fernando Valley. We are aware that there are many worthy applicants who spend a great deal of time and devotion volunteering in the community. We hope they will receive recognition this year,” said Dennis Watsabaugh, President, Board of Directors.

The Fernando Award is in the form of a miniature replica of the Fernando monument located in the Van Nuys Civic Center. Names of the award recipients are etched in the base of the monument and on a marble obelisk in Warner Center Park, located in Woodland Hills.
